Used to collect a sample of the substrate. The cavity in the bottom was filled with wax. When dropped to the bottom, sand, gravel, shells, or other material would stick to the wax. This provided a clue to the fishermen when searching for prime fishing spots.

10. Replica of Mr. Outz’sBow Skiff
By the first half of the 20th century, almost everyone in the Big Bend had a model bow skiff. Built of 16-foot old-growth cypress lumber, these vessels became the standard for commercial fishermen. People rowed, poled, sailed, and paddled them through creeks, bayous, and coastal waters. The original and replica were built with hand tools.
Circa: 1930’s
