Maritime Artifacts

Representative artifacts in the Big Bend Maritime Center Collection, as of September 2008.

1. Braided Boat Fender

Handmade during World War II by German prisoner of war in an Apalachicola marine manufacturing plant.
Circa: 1942 – 1945
Property: On loan from Tallahassee Museum.

 
2. Antique Bronze Book Ends

One of two “Old Ironside” bronze cast bookends. Circa: 1930’s
Property : Donation of Don Lesh.

 

3. Caulking Irons

Used in ship building and repair in Wakulla County.

Circa: 1930’s

4. Caulking Mallet

Mallet with dogwood head used in ship building and repair in Wakulla County

4. Caulking Hook

Used to pull out the old cotton in gaps between boards during repair of wooden boats. Circa: 1930’s

5. U. S. Navy Diving Helmet and Breast Plate

Circa: 1962

6. Antique Boat Engine

Caille – “Bantam”

7. Fog Horn

Circa: 1940

8. Harpoon Head

Used for spearing fish such as flounder.

Circa: 1940

9. Sounding Lead

Used to collect a sample of the substrate. The cavity in the bottom was filled with wax. When dropped to the bottom, sand, gravel, shells, or other material would stick to the wax. This provided a clue to the fishermen when searching for prime fishing spots.

10. Replica of Mr. Outz’sBow Skiff

By the first half of the 20th century, almost everyone in the Big Bend had a model bow skiff. Built of 16-foot old-growth cypress lumber, these vessels became the standard for commercial fishermen. People rowed, poled, sailed, and paddled them through creeks, bayous, and coastal waters. The original and replica were built with hand tools.
